PEOPLE PROFILE: JOHN STERRY

At MiX, we are so proud to work with great people who have delivered some brilliant projects. And as part of our series introducing some of our team, we are featuring our Business Development Manager, John Sterry.

Tell us a bit about what keeps you so busy at MiX:

Working closely with our Commercial Director, Adam Oliver, I spend most of my time researching potential clients, engaging key stakeholders, networking with industry colleagues, managing bids, and account managing clients once projects are secured to ensure we are delivering the excellent level of service our clients expect from MiX.

How did you find yourself in the industry?

After working in several New Business and Sales focused roles in the public sector, I thought it was time for a new challenge. Having always been really interested in technology and having heard of the excellent service MiX provides, I asked the team if I could observe how the sales process works in the private sector. After taking part in the ensuing stint of enjoyable and informative work experience that followed, I then proudly joined the team full time.

What appeals to you about the sector?

I love the idea that innovative technology is a driving factor to the success of an organisation, and I take real pleasure in seeing first-hand how what we do creates more efficient, interesting places to work for our clients. I’m very proud to be involved with such a knowledgeable organisation that makes a real difference to the end-users benefitting from the technology solutions we design.

Regarding the sector in general, sales by nature is an incredibly sociable industry and for those of you that know me, you will know I absolutely love meeting new people! Whether it be a potential client, key stakeholder or new industry colleague, I enjoy every interaction I take part in and believe it truly is the people around me that make the job so enjoyable for me.

What do you think the biggest challenges currently are in the sector?

I think the challenges around designing for the post-covid workplace are huge. Businesses are trying to understand how a new hybrid working model will look and what that means for them in terms of occupancy and technology requirements. I believe it is more vital than ever for our consultants to spend quality time with our clients to support their changing needs and design the right solution for their business model.

What kind of skills do you need to have to succeed in a role like this?

Problem solving is key. Every client is different and requires a different, tailored approach. As a Business Development Manager, the ability to build relationships and develop your network is crucial – I think being genuinely interested in other people definitely helps!

My top-tip for success is to be organised and flexible; there are often multiple projects both in the pipeline and being delivered at any one time, so you need to be able to keep on top of progress and adapt to change quickly!

What are you most proud of achieving since joining MiX?

We have recently secured a 200,000 ft2 project for a large financial institution. It’s my first really big project win, and it required a lot of input to secure it. It doesn’t always go our way, but when it does, it’s a great feeling!

Spill the beans; what do you like about working at MiX?

MiX is a very welcoming company with a very supportive team. People really enjoy what they do, and it shows! There is also the opportunity to develop and progress your career – it’s actively encouraged!

With such a busy day job, what do you do to unwind and relax?

I love cycling, walking, photography, technology, music (I play keyboard!) and the usual socialising with friends when I’m not at work.
